ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Sanskrit is known as the ‘Deva-Bhasha’, meaning the Lord of languages and it is regarded as the mother of all languages across the globe. It may perhaps be one of the oldest languages on earth. If we dig into our culture and heritage, we find the language to be a 'Goldmine' and the root of modern studies of History of Sciences and Medicine, Astrology, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Manuscriptology, Phonetics, Semantics, Lexicographyy etc. This language plays a leading role in the study of Literature, Value Education, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Ancient Indian History and Polity etc. Sanskrit is regarded as the most scientific language and the perfect vehicle of communication by connoisseurs like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Max Muller, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Sir William Jones to name a few.
Our vision is to uplift Sanskrit language among all students. We have the opportunity to flourish the Indian classical language and literature among the rural students. We also encourage socio-economically backward students to achieve higher studies in this field.
The General course and the Honours course of the department of Sanskrit started in the year 1978 and 2005 respectively. The CBCS curriculum was implemented by the University of Burdwan in 2017–18 academic year. In accordance with NEP 2020, the Curriculum & Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programme (CCFUP) is adopted in 2023–2024.
